Have you ever wondered what activities make for a good “Day in the Life” family photography session? I get this question a lot. Ask the Kotch family. They have it figured out.
I spent a Saturday morning with them while they did their thing. Nothing big and grand; just a typical Saturday. But what made this session so special is that they had thought about the little moments they cherish about their life right now ahead of time. Then, they filled their morning with these moments.
A leisurely stroll to get coffee and a cinnamon roll at a neighborhood bakery, their littlest flying fearlessly down the sidewalk on her newly mastered balance bike. A basement guitar practice which evolved into a whole family jam session. Potty training a child full of her own strong opinions. Picking vegetables from their backyard garden for smoothies, made and poured by the four year old (including his “secret ingredient”). Father and son lawn mowing – a real mower faithfully followed by a toy mower. While many of these are activities that they do everyday, in a week or a month these little things will likely be different.
Activities aside, the in between moments are some of my favorite to capture. These moments highlight this family’s connection and love. The shoulder cuddles because Daddy had a long week of work, repeated requests for “mama snuggles,” and, yes, the tired tears.
Day in the life sessions never cease to amaze me — even ordinary life can have such breathtaking beauty and tenderness.
It was such a pleasure to spend the morning with this sweet family and capture a small slice of their everyday.
